Helpful Information
School Day
The year 1 team will open the doors to our classrooms off the main playground at 8:45. There will be a member of staff on the door so if you have anything that you need to quickly communicate to the teacher please come talk to us. The children will have a playtime at 10:30 and 14:40 some fruit is provided but is not always available so we suggest the children bring in a piece of fruit as a snack. Lunch is at 12:00 and in year 1 you can choose for your child to receive a free school meal or you can send them in with a packed lunch. We politely remind all parents that we are very careful to maintain the safety of the children in our school and that we are a nut free school. The end of the day is 15:30 and the children will be delivered back into your care through the same doors that you dropped them off.
PE
This year we are continuing our programme to encourage the children to get fit by having them wear their PE kit to school on the days they have PE, in our case that is a Monday and Wednesday. They will be allowed to wear shorts, t-shirt, a jumper and trainers in the summer and in the winter we suggest a tracksuit and trainers.
Homework
Your child will be receiving homework on a Friday to be returned the following Wednesday and should only take around 20 minutes. I will always post the homework on google classroom with some additional links to games the children might enjoy playing but if there is a problem or you are unsure just ask a member of the Hawthorn team.

What we are learning in the Summer term...
In English, we are going to be continuing to focus on the children's phonics knowledge to further develop their fluency in reading and writing using alternative sounds. We will be reading, ‘Aliens love Underpants’ and ‘Sir Scallywag and the battle of stinky bottom’ as we are looking at stories with fantasy settings. We will be learning about recounts and writing our own recounts of our trip to Mountfitchet Castle. We will then look at information texts and their features. We will be continuing to develop basic grammar and using cursive handwriting to support children in understanding how to correctly form letters. To support your child we recommend reading with them daily. We will be running phonics sessions to reinforce and introduce new sounds and you will see a rapid improvement in their reading when they practise regularly. We will be preparing for the Phonics Screening Check, practising using past papers.
In Maths, we will be focusing on, ‘Multiplication and Division’, ‘Fractions’, ‘Position and Direction’, ‘Place Value to 100’, ‘Money’ and ‘Time’, following the White Rose maths scheme.
In Science, we are going to be learning about Plants. We will be learning about the different parts of the plant and what plants need in order to grow. We will be naming some plants by looking at the characteristics of different plants. We will also be looking at how some trees keep their leaves all year round and why.
In History, we are going to be learning about castles and what it was like to live in castles. We will look at the different types of castle and how and why they were built. We will also be going on a trip to Mountfitchet Castle!
In Geography, we are going to be learning about Seasides. The children will learn the difference between the coast and inland. We will be looking at both human and physical features of the seaside. We will be learning to read a simple map by using symbols.
In RE, we are going to be learning about Islam. This will include looking at the Five Pillars of Islam and what these mean. We will be learning about some of the stories of the Prophet Muhammad and some key Muslim beliefs. We will also find out about some key Muslim celebrations.
In PE this term, we will be working on our ball skills, including throwing, catching and kicking. Children will be working independently, in pairs and in small groups. Working alongside these activities, we will be developing basic skills required in an invasion game. They will learn how to attack and defend, and what being in possession of the ball means. They will learn the rules of games and how to score points.
In Art, we are going to looking at patterns using shape, colour and repeated lines. We will be exploring different threads including wool and string and we will be making a box loom.
In Design and Technology, our topic is ‘Teddy Bear’s Picnic’. We will be looking at where food comes from. We will be designing and making food such as teddy biscuits, fruit skewers and rainbow omelettes. All food which can be used in a teddy bear’s picnic!
In PHSE we will be thinking about feelings and how to respond to other’s feelings. We will also be looking at responsibilities and what this means. In the second half term, we will be focussing on change and transition, as well as personal safety and well-being.
