English
In English, we are going to be continuing to focus on the children's phonics knowledge to further develop their fluency in reading and writing using alternative sounds. We will be reading, ‘Paddington’s Post’, introducing how to write letters, and looking at narratives, including ‘Little Red and the Very Hungry Lion’. We will be learning about non-fiction, information texts to inform, introducing ‘Big Book of Bugs’. We will be continuing to develop basic grammar and encouraging children to use correct formation when writing. This term we will be continuing to reinforce the phonemes we have already learnt as well as introducing new phonemes and alternative spellings to different sounds. To support your child, we recommend reading with them daily, you will see a rapid improvement in their reading when they practise regularly. We will be preparing for the Phonics Screening Check, practising using past papers.
Maths
In Maths, we will be focusing on three main areas, 'Place Value' within 20 and 50, 'Addition and Subtraction to 20', ‘Length and Height and Mass and Volume' following the White Rose maths scheme. We will be developing the children's understanding of number, representations of number, addition and subtraction techniques and measuring. We will do this through various practical and written activities and begin to challenge children further with problem solving questions.
Science
In Science, we are going to be learning about ‘Everyday Materials’. We will be looking closely at objects around us and discover what materials they are made of. We will be finding out about materials such as wood, plastic, glass, metal, water and rock and discovering their origins. We will be conducting some experiments to find out more about the properties of materials and will be comparing and grouping depending on these properties.
History
In History, we are going to be learning about castles and what it was like to live in castles. We will look at the different types of castles and how and why they were built. We will be learning about the Battle of Hastings. We will also be going on a trip to Mountfitchet Castle!
Geography
In Geography, we are going to be learning about Seasides. The children will learn the difference between the coast and inland. We will be looking at both human and physical features of the seaside. We will be learning to read a simple map by using symbols.
RE
In RE, we are going to be learning about Islam. This will include looking at the Five Pillars of Islam and what these mean. We will be learning about some of the stories of the Prophet Muhammad and some key Muslim beliefs. We will also find out about some key Muslim celebrations.
PE
In PE this term, we will be working on invasion games, where children try to score in the opposition’s goal. We will also be introducing athletics to the children in the second part of the term. Children will develop skills such as running at different speeds, changing direction, jumping and throwing, all to support them with athletic activities.
Art
In Art, we will be exploring different threads including wool and string and we will be making a box loom.
Design and Technology
In Design and Technology, our topic is ‘Teddy Bear’s Picnic’. We will be looking at where food comes from. We will be designing and making food such as teddy biscuits, fruit skewers and rainbow omelettes. All food which can be used in a teddy bear’s picnic! We will also be looking at playgrounds and what materials are used to build them. We will designing and making our own playgrounds within a group.
PHSE
In PHSE we will be thinking about citizenship in the first half term, including why we need to follow rules, making democratic decisions, how to care for animals and belonging to a group. In the second half term, we will be learning about economic well-being, talking about what is money, how to save money and how to keep money safe. We will also be focussing on change and transition, as children prepare to move in to Year 2.
Computing
This term in Computing, we will be exploring how technology can be used creatively through animated stories and coding. Children will learn about the differences between traditional books and digital books, and use this understanding to design and draw their own characters for a story. They will also explore how backgrounds and objects can be used on screen to create simple stories and animations. We will then begin learning about coding by understanding that computer programs follow a set of instructions called code. The children will explore what an event is in computing and how actions can be triggered within a program. By the end of the unit, they will use their new skills to plan, create and test their own simple computer program.
