Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

Together We Grow

At Silsoe VC Lower School, our Christian vision is at the heart of everything we do:

“For all to flourish as confident, resilient and kind individuals who encourage one another and grow together in God's love.”

Together We Grow.

We believe that every child and adult is unique, valued and deserving of dignity, respect and the opportunity to flourish.

As a Church of England school, we are committed to creating a welcoming, caring and inclusive community where everyone feels a sense of belonging. Our values of kindness, confidence and resilience guide our relationships, decisions and daily school life.

We recognise, respect and celebrate the diversity of our school community and wider society. Through our curriculum, collective worship, relationships and enrichment opportunities, we encourage children to appreciate differences, challenge prejudice, show compassion and develop an understanding of the world around them.

Our Commitment to Equality

We are committed to fulfilling our responsibilities under the Equality Act 2010 and the Public Sector Equality Duty.

Our commitment extends to people with the protected characteristics set out in the Equality Act 2010, and we seek to ensure that nobody experiences unlawful discrimination, harassment or victimisation.

This means that we seek to:

  • Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation.
  • Advance equality of opportunity by identifying and reducing barriers to learning, participation and achievement.
  • Foster positive relationships and understanding between people from different backgrounds and with different experiences and characteristics.

We recognise that equality does not always mean treating everyone in exactly the same way. Children and adults may require different support, reasonable adjustments or opportunities to ensure that they can participate fully and flourish.

We are committed to ensuring that all pupils, including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), disadvantaged pupils and those who may face additional barriers, are supported to achieve their potential.

Putting Our Commitment into Practice

Our commitment to equality is reflected throughout school life, including:

  • Providing a broad, balanced and inclusive curriculum which celebrates diversity and promotes understanding.
  • Supporting pupils through high-quality teaching, adaptive approaches, reasonable adjustments and targeted provision where appropriate.
  • Promoting positive behaviour, respectful relationships, kindness and a strong sense of belonging.
  • Providing opportunities for all pupils to participate in educational visits, enrichment, pupil leadership and wider school experiences.
  • Listening to pupil and parent voice and using feedback to inform school improvement.
  • Promoting equality and fair treatment in recruitment, employment and professional development.
  • Working closely with families, governors, the church and the wider community.

Monitoring and Reviewing Equality

Our Headteacher and Senior Leadership Team monitor equality and inclusion through our established school evaluation and improvement processes.

The Governing Board provides oversight of our responsibilities under the Public Sector Equality Duty and reviews progress towards our Equality Objectives.

When making relevant decisions about policies, provision and resources, school leaders and governors consider the potential impact on different groups and the steps needed to promote equality of opportunity.

We publish information demonstrating our compliance with the Public Sector Equality Duty at least annually and formally review our Equality Objectives at least every four years.

Our commitment to equality is an important part of our Christian vision and our continuing work to ensure that everyone in our school community can flourish.
