Autumn Term Learning
Maths
Throughout the Autumn Term, the children will explore many areas of maths which they have previously been taught. We will review and recap these areas and build on their prior knowledge. These areas include:
|
English
The children will have the fantastic opportunities to explore a wide variety of texts for English in the Autumn Term. Through these, they will learn different styles of writing including:
|
Science
The Autumn Term kicks off with electricity whereby the children learn to make an electrical circuit, different conductors and the importance of electrical safety. The second half of the term, the children explore sound. They learn how sound is created, how it can change through different materials and how it travels. |
Guided Reading
The guided reading for the Autumn Term allows the children to discover two new fiction texts and several non-fiction texts. Through these, they will analyse, retrieve, research, draw inference, summarise and develop their fluency when reading aloud. |
Geography / History
The Autumn Term begins with our brand new geography topic on maps. The children will examine a range of maps and interpret the meaning of different symbols and keys. They will also begin to understand the difference between human and physical features on maps. We continue into the second half of the term with Anglo Saxons. This is a continuation of the timeline of history from Year 3. They begin to understand what happened when Romans left Britain and the influence that Anglo Saxons had. |
Art&Design / DT
The first part of the Autumn Term is Art and Design with power prints followed by sculpture 3D mega materials. During this, the children are carving soap, modelling with wire and 3D drawings. Autumn Term 2 is the DT project of light boxes. The children use their science knowledge to create a working light box with a circuit. They stick colour and construct their final design. |
PSHE
Mental health and well-being is vitally important to us as a school and therefore we begin year 4 with this topic. We begin looking and review our emotions and how some things our out of our control. We also look at ways to build resilience to making mistakes and how our actions affect emotions not only for us, but others too. |
Computing
The importance of online safety and how to stay safe online is how we begin the Autumn Term. As technology is regularly used in today's society, the children will be learning about its benefits but also the risks associated with using the internet. Later in Autumn Term 2, the children learn how to communicate via emails. |
French
The children continue to build on their knowledge of French by learning to present their self in the start of the Autumn Term. They learn to say their age, name, where they live and their nationality. The Autumn Term 2 is learning about the classroom. They gain an understanding of classroom equipment and explain what they have and do not have in a pencil case. |
RE
The Autumn Term starts with exploring the Hindu religion. The children will gain an understanding of how Hindu's express their faith and within their communication and establish a comparison with other religions. From this, the Autumn Term 2 explores a variety of religions and their festivals. |
PE
Physical Education explores a range of skills including running, jumping, coordination, defence and attacking skills through games. The two topics for the Autumn term are:
|
Music
The music topics allow the children to develop their skills and understanding of pitch, tone and volume and how they can project their voices to a range of songs. They will begin the Autumn Term with Mamma Mia and finish with learning an instrument. |

Ways you can help your child:
- Read with your child for 10 minutes atleast 3 times a week (but also encourage your child to read independently)
- Ask the children questions about what they are learning about in school
- Complete your child's homework alongside them
- Encourage practice of times tables using TT Rockstars or other methods. (TT Rockstars log in details can be found in the front cover of your homework book or in their reading record)
- Practice the weekly spellings with your child (also encourage them to look at practising the common exception words too!)
