Our Spring Term Learning
Maths
We will begin 2024 by continuing our learning on multiplication and division. We will be multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100 before moving on to multiplying and dividing both 2 digit and 3 digit numbers by a 1 digit number! We will be focusing on solving word problems to strengthen our skills in applying our knowledge and skills. We will then move on to explore length and perimeter. This will involve measuring and calculating the length and area of different types of shapes (both regular and irregular). We will finish the spring term with some exciting learning on fractions and decimals! We will be partitioning, ordering, adding, subtracting, converting, finding equivalents and more! It is really important that children and Year 4 are supported and encouraged to practice their multiplication tables both at home as well as at school. Using TT Rockstars is a fun and interactive way to do this! (Check the front your homework book for your log in details!) |
English
In English, we start by exploring the epic tale of Beowulf and will work towards writing our very own epic battle. After this, we will move on to instruction writing where we will learn how to write clear, concise instructions including technical language. In Grammar we will focusing on the Year 4 objectives including, fronted adverbials, apostrophes and paragraphs. Spellings will be tested each week which will include a mixture of words featuring our spelling focus and KS2 high frequency words. |
Science
We will begin the term by learning about the three states of matter (solids, liquids and gases). The children will use previous knowledge to help them identify solids, liquids and gases and then learn to describe their properties. They will discover that some materials change state when they are heated and cooled and they will learn the stages in the water cycle. In the second half of the Spring Term, the children will be learning about teeth and digestion. In this unit, the children will identify the different types of teeth in humans and their simple functions and they will go onto explore the parts of the digestive system and the functions they have. |
Guided Reading
This term we will begin with a visual text based on the legend ‘Thor and the Giants’. We then will begin our first main text ‘Arthur and the Golden Rope’ by Joe Todd Stanton which is a picture book but in the style of a graphic novel. This text is a fantastic introduction to Norse mythology and will keep us gripped to the end. We will then focus on some non- fiction texts based on the Vikings and our Science topics and we will end the term by reading and performing poetry. We will endeavor to listen to ALL children read aloud during our 2x weekly guided reading sessions. Please ensure that you bring your reading book to school with you everyday! We will visit the library once per week as a class where your child will be able to select a book to share with you at home. Please ensure these are returned from changing the next week. |
Geography / History
In Spring 1 we will continue our journey through British history and move on to the Vikings! We will learn about who they were, why they came to Britain, how they changed Britain and finally how the Anglo-Saxon and Viking period came to an end in 1066. |
Art&Design / DT
We will begin the term with our Art topic Light and dark using paint and mixed media. We will explore different painting techniques, compare paintings by artists according to elements such as texture or colour and practising creating tints and shades when colour mixing. In Spring 2 we will move onto our DT topic in which we will explore moving books. We will work to create our own moving books using different mechanisms such as levers, flaps, springs, coils and wheels. |
PSHE.
Our PSHE learning this term focuses on 'living in the wider world'. We begin the term considering our differences and appreciating the diverse society in which we live. We then move on to more practical life skills considering what is dangerous for our bodies and also completing our Bikeability training to enable us be safer road users. |
Computing
We will start the term, as we always do, with our session on E-safety before then moving on to effective searching. We will then use the skills we have learnt to develop our skills and knowledge in using technology to present information. We will use Microsoft PowerPoint to create our own presentation which we will then present to the class. We will finish the Spring term looking at another way technology can be used and applied in the real world through our Spreadsheets unit. |
French
The children will explore and read the story Goldilocks and Three Bears in French. They will learn to decode a text in French and to know they only have to understand the gist of the words to understand and follow. They will then move onto learning family. The children will learn to say who is in their family as well as their names and ages. They will also extend their knowledge of numbers in French up to 70. |
RE
Our RE topic for the first half of Spring term will focus on the Muslim religion with a particular focus on festivals and celebrations within this religion. We will explore why and how Muslims celebrate and compare this to our understanding of other world religions. We will then move on to explore Christianity and the Pentecost. We will consider the impact of Pentecost for Christians. |
PE
We will begin the term working on multiskills and gymnastics. This will give us an excellent opportunity to develop our fundamental movement skills and develop our agility, balance and coordination. For the second part of the term we will move on to Orienteering and Kwik Cricket. Through orienteering we will develop our skills in team work and problem solving. In Cricket we will begin to apply the skills we have developed into a game based situation. |
Music
This half term in our music lessons, Year 4 will be building upon their previous knowledge of songs and being introduced to the composure of rap sections. They will work towards a group composition and children will learn to edit and improve their work as they go. They will perform as a group towards the end of the term.. In the second half of the term the children will continue to develop their skills in composing, improvising and performing. This unit is entitled ‘Lean on Me’ and uses the Bill Withers song as a crux. |

How to capture a dragon!
In our English lessons, we have been working on developing instructions. We started by looking at a newspaper article about a dragon which has been attacking Silsoe.
The children then worked on different ways that they could capture the dragon to attempt to save Silsoe from further destruction.
