Welcome to Elm Class.
Summer Term
Welcome to the Summer term, the start of our last term and exciting times ahead. Year 4 has been a busy year, preparing the children for Middle School, developing their independence and confidence to cope with different teachers and a different pace of work. It has also been a fun year, allowing the children to take key roles and responsibilities within the school with many opportunities such as playtime buddies and play leaders. This term we are looking forward to lots of end of year activities including our residential trip to Grafham Water.
Our PE days are Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Ways you can help
- Read with your child for 10 minutes every day.
- Ask the children questions about what they are learning about in school.
- Ask the children to tell you the time. You could show them both analogue and digital clocks to help them become more familiar with reading time in different formats.
- Ask the children to help you to count, money. You could also ask your children to tell you what change you should receive when paying in a shop.
- Support your child with their times tables.
English
In English, we will continue to enjoy reading and writing fiction and non-fiction texts. We will again be reading and writing stories and, we continue reading and researching using non-fiction texts and search engines. We will also focus on basic skills weekly, both in class and with homework, including grammar and spelling skills.
Reading
Year 4 is a busy year, however we will continue to listen to all children read at least once a week from their reading book and in our guided reading sessions weekly, please ensure you child has their reading record and reading book in school every day. We thank you for continuing to listen to your children read at home. In the past, parents have asked about suggestions to keep children reading, so you might like to try listening to audio books or using ebooks on a tablet device as an alternative to a traditional format. As children become more confident readers, please continue to encourage your child to read out loud to an adult at home and ask questions about what they are reading. Please record anything they read aloud into their reading records.

We are aware that this is an exciting year for the children, being the oldest children in the school. We cannot stress enough how important it is for the children to be good role-models, showing their values and taking responsibility for their learning at all times. Please feel free to approach us about any concerns you may have. You can contact me (Mrs Chandler) directly after school, or via the school office.
