Helpful Information
School Day
The year 1 team will open the doors to our classrooms off the main playground at 8:45. There will be a member of staff on the door so if you have anything that you need to quickly communicate to the teacher please come talk to us. The children will have a playtime at 10:25 and 14:30 some fruit is provided but is not always available so we suggest the children bring in a piece of fruit as a snack. Lunch is at 12:00 and in year 1 you can choose for your child to receive a free school meal or you can send them in with a packed lunch. We politely remind all parents that we are very careful to maintain the safety of the children in our school and that we are a nut free school. The end of the day is 15:30 and the children will be delivered back into your care through the same doors that you dropped them off.
PE
This year we are continuing our programme to encourage the children to get fit by having them wear their PE kit to school on the days they have PE, in our case that is a Monday and Wednesday. They will be allowed to wear shorts, t-shirt, a jumper and trainers in the summer and in the winter we suggest a tracksuit and trainers.
Homework
Your child will be receiving homework on a Friday to be returned the following Wednesday and should only take around 20 minutes. I will always post the homework on google classroom with some additional links to games the children might enjoy playing but if there is a problem or you are unsure just ask a member of the Hawthorn team.

What we are learning in the Summer term...
In English, we are going to be focusing on developing the children's phonics knowledge to develop their fluency in reading and writing. We will be continuing to develop basic grammar and practising cursive handwriting to support children in understanding how to correctly form sentences and sequences of sentences. To support your child we recommend reading with them daily. We will be running phonics sessions to reinforce and introduce new sounds and you will see a rapid improvement in their reading when they practise regularly.
In Maths, we will be developing our learners understanding of number and ability to count forwards and backwards to 100. We will be beginning by focusing on their fundamental skills such as number bonds to 20, addition and subtraction before applying this learning across other areas of maths such as measure and shape. Any counting games at home will really benefit and support the children with their number recognition, counting, adding and subtracting.
In Science, we are going to be learning about plants. We will be learning the difference between deciduous and evergreen trees. Learning the different parts of the plant, how to name and classify plants. We will be investigating the plants and what they need to grow healthy and observing the differences and similarities.
In History, we are going to be learning about castles which is going to include a visit to Mountfitchet castle. We will be learning about how castles changed over time, the purpose of castles and about the lives of people living in the castles. We will be using a range of sources and talking about how local history in Bedford.
In Geography, we are going to be learning about the geography of the seaside. We are going to be continuing to apply the children's knowledge of the physical and human geographical features. Focusing on looking at the impact of humans on the environment and the features of a coastline.
In RE, we are going to be learning about Islam. The children will be developing a deeper knowledge of the core beliefs and practises of Muslims with aim of encouraging tolerance and understanding. We will think about the 99 names of Islam, how Muslim's pray and their celebrations.
For PE lessons we will be developing the children's agility, balance and stamina through a range of multi-skill activities designed to develop the core skills that children need to be successful in all physical activities. For example, hand-eye co-ordination and running.
In Art, we are going to be focusing on the medium of paper and the different pieces of art we can create using this medium. They will be thinking about art from all over the world and practising a range of techniques including origami.
In PHSE we are going to be supporting the children to continue to develop their understanding of the school rules, how it feels to transition to a new class, how to develop their protective behaviours.
