Spring Term 2024
Welcome back to a new school year in Palm Class. We hope you have had a super Christmas and are ready and rested for the busy year ahead. Below you will find some information about the exciting learning happening in Year 3 this half term. If you have any questions, queries or concerns please contact Miss Rowswell via the school office.
English
We will review and practise many different types of texts this term. We kick off the summer term with instructions where the children will explore the features of instructions and learn more about their purpose. They will then write their own set of instructions. We will also be exploring diary writing and stories from other cultures this term. The children will be learning a variety of new spelling patterns this term including homophones and near homophones. We will also be learning the common exception words for year 3 and 4 and recapping the common exception words previously taught. We will be completing a spelling test every Monday based on the spelling rule taught that week. The children will have opportunities to practise these spellings during their morning work. Please log onto spelling shed when you can to practise the spellings that we have been learning in class: www.spellingshed.com/en-gb/ |
Maths
We begin the new term building on what the children learnt in Year 2. Children will develop their knowledge of place value, addition and subtraction and becoming confident in their multiplication and division knowledge. The children will learn and develop their knowledge of the 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 10 times tables. This will include how to use these times tables to multiply and divide. Multiplication development continues to be of high importance in KS2. Therefore multiplication cards will be used and the children will have opportunities to practise and progress in their times tables knowledge. The multiplication card includes bronze, silver and gold. To achieve the bronze star, the children must recall that timetable in order; for example; 1x3=3, 2x3=6. To achieve the silver star, the children must recall that timetables in any given order and also understand the related facts; for example; 2x3=6 3x2=6 6÷2=3 6÷3=2 To achieve the gold star, the children must understand the language related to multiplication and division; for example; the product of 4 and 7 is 28, the quotient of 54 and 6 is 9. |
Science
We explore the wonderful topic of animals including humans this term. The children will identify that animals, including humans, need the right types and amount of nutrition, and that they cannot make their own food; they get nutrition from what they eat. We will also explore that humans and some other animals have skeletons and muscles for support, protection and movement. We will learn about the different types of skeletons animals can have and take a look at some x-rays showing different endoskeletons. |
History / Geography
In History we will be learning all about the Stone Age to the Bronze Age and all the way through to the Iron Age. We will investigate what we know about these periods and what evidence we have to give us our knowledge. We are very lucky to be visiting Celtic Harmony for an inspiring and exciting trip back in time in which the children can apply the knowledge and skills they have already learnt... and pick up many new ones! |
Art / Design and Technology
For the first half term we will begin to develop our skills in Art by exploring Prehistoric cave paintings and the different methods they used to create paint and mark-make using natural products. |
Computing
In computing the children will be discussing and learning about how to stay safe online. They will also be practising their touch typing skills and will produce a poster using Microsoft Publisher. |
PE
This term in PE we will developing our skills in orienteering and multi-skills. Please send your child into school in plain black shorts, the school PE top or a plain white t-shirt. See the school uniform policy for further details on clothing for PE. Please be reminded that any ear piercings should be removed or taped up for safety reasons. |
Religious Education
In RE we will be thinking about what kind of world Jesus wanted. We are extremely lucky to have a visit from Silsoe Church's very own Reverend and we will get the opportunity to ask the Reverend all the questions we have about the Christian faith and the church as a place of worship. |
French
The children have the fantastic opportunity to learn a language in Key Stage 2. They begin their understanding in Year 3 by learning greetings, the names of classroom equipment and numbers. They learn these in a variety of fun ways, mainly focusing on verbal communication with each other. |
Music
Throughout the year the children will be using a variety of instruments as well as their voices to play and perform in solo and ensemble contexts. They will also be learning about the history of music and explore it in much greater detail. |
Reading in KS2
In KS2, children are encouraged to become confident, expressive and passionate readers. Most children will move fairly quickly onto the broader range of books available in the Brown, Grey and Blue book bands. Your child may spend quite a while on each book band. This isn't because they are not progressing, it is rather an opportunity for your child to be exposed to a wide range of authors, genres and styles of writing at a level in which they can comprehend what they are reading. They will be asked to answer comprehension questions to show their understanding of what they have read and encouraged to discuss the books they have enjoyed from the book band and the ones they have disliked.
We aspire to make every child a passionate reader and need your help to do this!
We will try to read with your child as often as we can in school. This will be either 1:1 with an adult, or in a guided reading activity where the children will read in a group and discuss the text together. We will read with your child a minimum of once a week but encourage you to supplement this by reading with your child as often as possible at home.
If your child would like access to more books at home, perhaps you could use Oxford Reading Owl to read different books. Oxford Owl has many different books and you can download and read them all online for free.
